Answering the Question: “Is the Copywriting Market Saturated?”
You may well be wondering if there is any point to taking up copywriting, after all, surely the copywriting market is saturated?
I know it might seem like there are more copywriters out there than there are jobs.
And while there may be a lot of self-proclaimed copywriters out there, the market is NOT saturated with quality copywriters.
Plain and simple.
Anyone can call themselves a copywriter. There’s no certification or degree attached to it like a doctor or lawyer.
However, the amount of skilled, trustworthy copywriters out there is much, much lower. Clients need to know they’ll have a quality product delivered on time. You’d be shocked to hear some of the stories I have of “copywriters” ghosting clients or delivering subpar work.
Highly skilled professionals will always be in demand, no matter what niche or market. And that’s great news for you! As long as you learn the skills, present yourself with authenticity and professionalism, and deliver quality work on time, I can assure you you’ll get clients!
Compared to other work-from-home jobs out there, you can make money fairly quickly as a freelance copywriter.
In fact, you can make more as a copywriter than many other types of freelance writers.
The big difference is the need for copywriters is all about the client making money. Often it is LOTS of money. As in millions.
When they have strategic copy that works to create more sales, they make more money. Simple as that. Entrepreneurs and businesses need copywriters!
And they will pay.
For me, I started online around 2004. Nobody knew who I was. But with a very basic beginning in copywriting, I was able to hit multiple six figures in my first year.
And I did it entirely from my home on wheels too. It really IS a perfect job for working from home online, no matter where you are.
As for the money…
I’m not saying everyone can do what I did that quickly. I’m probably unusual in that.
But it is certainly possible to get to a very healthy five figures within the first year.
Take a look at what Salary.com shows for national average earnings as a copywriter:
And that’s just an average. Fact is, working in an agency as an employee actually pays LESS than working as a freelance copywriter. Many agencies require a college degree. They will have tightly constrained salary limitations regarding how much you make and when you can get a raise. And you’re still under the thumb of the powers that be. Boo! Why would you do that when you can be your own boss instead?

This answer might surprise you a little bit. You do not need to be an expert editor or proofreader to become a copywriter.
However, the point of copywriting is to sell through words…meaning you need to have a solid grasp of the language so you can communicate effectively.
That also means you need to have basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills; otherwise, your writing will be difficult to read and understand, making for a very unhappy client.
No matter your grammar skill level, you should always run your copy through a spell checker at the very least. These tools aren’t perfect but they will find glaring errors that could be potentially embarrassing.
I also recommend using Grammarly if you’re looking for a step up from a basic spell checker. Again, it’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing!
If you really want to make sure your copy is as error-free as possible, I suggest having a trusted friend or colleague read through it. A second set of eyes can’t hurt (unless they’re worse at grammar than you are 🙃).
Don’t let your failed spelling test in fifth grade or your C paper in English class prevent you from becoming a copywriter. You got this!
If you’re worried about the equipment you need to become a copywriter I have good news! Most of the equipment you need to become a copywriter you’ll already own, so you’re off to a great start 🙂
One of the best things about becoming a copywriter is that it doesn’t require a massive amount of financial investment.
Here’s the bare minimum you’ll need to become a freelance copywriter:
A reliable internet connection
A cell phone
Space to work?
Now if you want to elevate your game and really focus on becoming successful, you’ll need to regularly invest in yourself and your craft. There’s always something new to learn in the copywriting world, which is why it’s important to stay on top of the industry trends and standards.

Is it true that I need a degree to become a copywriter?
This is one of the most asked questions I get from people looking to becoming a freelance copywriter. And the answer is “Nope.”
You 100% do NOT need a college degree or any previous experience to become a successful copywriter.
I didn’t have a college degree when I got started, but I still managed to make multiple six figures during my first year.
If that isn’t proof enough, I don’t know what is!
In fact, sometimes the folks with the journalism or English degrees find it HARDER to get into the groove of copywriting, not easier. Why? Because they often have to UN-learn what was pounded into their brains about “how to write.”
Copywriting is much more conversational and informal than many other types of writing.
If you can write like a person talks and factor in marketing strategy at the core of the “conversation,” you have the first foundational skills to becoming a copywriter.
