An Interview With Lisa

How Authentic Copy Teaches Mindset and Spirituality


Lisa is one of my Authentic Copy students. In this interview she explains how she stalked me (in a good way) and how Authentic Copy is helping her return to joy by lighting a fire and getting her excited again.

Tina: This is Tina Lorenz, and I’m here today with one of my Authentic Copy students, Lisa.

I actually asked you to join me for a few minutes because I just wanted to chat with you about your experience and your journey in Authentic Copy, because you’ve been at it for, I don’t know, maybe four or five weeks, something like that?

Lisa: Yeah, somewhere in there. 

How Lisa Stalked Tina!


Tina: You shared a story with me of how you found me in the first place. I was thinking, could we just chat about that for a minute?

As I recall, you were in a very well-known copywriting program some years ago, actually learning copywriting. I was an instructor in that program at the time, but you weren’t in my room, so to speak. We were at the same school but not in the same room.

You were telling me kind of an interesting story about that. What is it that you noticed when you were in that program, and I happened to be teaching in it as well?

Lisa: Well we were all assigned different teachers, and I was taking the class for another business that I’ve since closed. The teacher set up the class in a billboard style, so you would post your homework, which was your sales letter or your bullets or whatever portion of the homework assignment you had. Your teacher would, at some point within the next 24 to 48 hours, critique it, and give you tips to improve. The nice part about the class was that you could see other students, what they submitted and what their teachers were responding to their stuff.

My teacher was absent for several days for whatever reason. So, I started browsing the other classrooms, and other work people had submitted, and that’s where I discovered you, and I really, really liked your style! I liked the way you just responded in the tips you gave. I just felt like everything was helpful and it made sense and I was like, Oh yeah, I can apply this. And so, I did steal some of the info, and I actually requested to be switched to your classroom, but I was told that that was not possible. I was very disappointed but I sort of stalked you!

Tina: In a good way 😉  

Discovering Authentic Copy


Lisa: On Facebook, on the Internet. I watched for you and then when I saw you join Facebook, somehow you popped up into my feed, or I was searching for you one day, and there you were! I friended you, and you said, “well watch for this,” because you were very kind to reply to a private message and when your class Authentic Copy came around the timing was perfect, and I said, this is something I’m definitely going to do! So I decided to revisit it because I did coffee for a little while and I took a hiatus, had some personal issues, with those behind me I decided it was time to revisit it.

Tina: It’s so funny because I didn’t know any of this. You know, I didn’t know that you were in that program. I didn’t know that you had asked for me to be your teacher! And so it’s just really been interesting to hear this now because I had no idea at the time, that was not shared information or anything like that.

So this is kind of one of those lessons for people to have. You never know in your own business when you’re working online or in the services you are offering online, you never know, where those connections are going to lead. And sometimes connections are being made you don’t even know about. I think this is a really helpful thing for people to keep in mind as you have your journey online that you never know who’s watching!


How Mindset and Spirituality are

Helping Lisa 


Tina: You know, it was just waiting for that right moment. I think that should actually be like super encouraging to people as they are building a business. Whether they’re starting as a copywriter, or they have their own service to offer, that sometimes it takes some time, sometimes that traction isn’t something that you realize is happening right away. But I think that’s a great lesson, Lisa. So I really appreciate you sharing that.

I think the other thing you’ve mentioned to me is that you didn’t really realize how much mindset and spiritual aspect is part of how I teach copywriting, what I bring into the program at Authentic Copy. And you weren’t even fully aware at first that that was an important element, as that’s proven to be for you actually personally too. So can you talk to me a little bit about that? Like it kind of surprised you that I lead with mindset in Authentic Copy, that’s where I begin. And it’s a super foundational piece; we speak about it frequently in our Authentic Copy interact Facebook group, don’t we?

Lisa: We do, we do. And it’s an important part of things. It’s amazing to me how much just different things about our family, society, even when you’re a little kid and were with your parents. You might’ve been in the store, and you want something, a piece candy or a certain cereal or who knows what, and then Mom or Dad says “Oh, we can’t afford that.” And how much we internalize some of those lessons, and some go deeper than that. Some people are dirt poor, and some don’t have that issue.

But it’s amazing the lessons that we take on, and it’s been surprising to me knowing my own background and my issues around money, how far forward they can carry, and we don’t even really realize it.

Lisa: So mindset is really just that whole habitual thought where you don’t even realize until you’re introduced to a paradigm shift, that you can think differently and you can believe differently and be able to change.

I’ve heard it called a “money thermostat.” You know, there was a time when I had my business, where I stuck a dollar amount on the wall behind me, behind one of my big pieces of equipment where no one else would see it. But anytime I would go to change the thermostat for the heat in the building; I would see that and say, yeah, that’s what I want to earn.

I did achieve some success with the business, but I only scratched the surface of the mindset, and I had a lot of other issues behind it. So, when I discovered that that was a piece of what you are offering, that was very intriguing for me.

Lisa: And I thought score! I got a bonus that I really wasn’t expecting. I bought the course fully expecting that this was just going to be a review, help me sharpen my skills, maybe get some good critiques and get rolling.


Crushing the Self-Doubt


Honestly, the bonus that I went after when I signed up was the one that told you how to get your first clients, because that’s always been an issue for me. And I honestly think that too, the money mindset and the “WHO’s going to want to listen to me or hire me?”, kind of go hand in hand.

It’s a really well-rounded piece, it’s spiritual, but it’s not religious based. If you’ve ever done self-hypnosis, or if you’ve ever done, yoga you know, there are so many different ways you can meditate and focus.

Lisa: It could be prayer. I mean, whatever works for the individual. It’s been really wonderful for me to be able to focus on that and, come up with a new mantra that I can use, and just noticing my thoughts and, being able to sort of change on the fly instead of doing something for days and days and not even realizing how it’s been affecting you. It’s been okay, really raised my awareness. I feel things changing.

Tina: Yeah. That’s one of the things you said to me. One of the things in the Authentic Copy interactive Facebook group, it’s actually one of the bonuses, (shows wrist band) I’ve actually got my wrist band on, we’re Celestial Sherpas TM, and I teach a whole spiritual dimension of what that means and what is that Sherpa aspect and it’s become kind of, you know, you even coined the phrase Sherpal or Sherpa-ing it’s kind of become a catchphrase in the group.

What that means is that not only are we able to tap into the guidance of the inspiration we need individually, and how that affects us in our regular life, but also how we write copy and what we put into that. But also how we deliver the message because a Sherpa is also an emissary and not only a guide but an emissary.


Feeling the Forward Momentum


Tina:  And so we have kind of a culture we’re building inside, outside of copy where we each become that Celestial Sherpa TM, but not only for ourselves but for those we serve. I think that it’s something that’s become really important, I think to all of us. I know we’re one of the bonuses. I am a Celestial Sherpa TM, and it’s to help us keep that, that touchstone of however our belief systems are, but something higher. A higher power to me, it’s God. I believe that, most of the people in the group, I think identify it that way; that inspiration and that calling of what we’re meant to do.

One of the things that’s so exciting to me about you, Lisa, is that you have shared with me that you just feel this change happening in yourself. You feel this kind of; I think I would interpret it as forward momentum. You can correct me if you feel it’s something different, but what would you say about that? That you just feel that growth inside, the really personal, internalized awareness of what you’re capable of, where you can go with this.


How Lisa is Returning to Joy and Excitement


Lisa: For me I think it’s more of a return to joy. And it’s kind of silly if you think about it that way, but honestly, it’s when you’re really young, and you get really excited about something, you have that passion for something. Whether it was your first somersault or your first school play or whatever it happened to be, that kind of lit a fire for you and made you excited.

Over time you hear “Don’t be too happy” “Don’t cry” “Don’t laugh now, you’ll cry tomorrow” silly things like that, that you hear, kind of steal your thunder, you don’t want to be a wet blanket or whatever you want to call it. So, you sort of learn through life to kind of find this middle road, where you never get too high, don’t get too happy, don’t become too successful. Let’s be mediocre all the way.

Lisa: Moving from that point and realizing that it can be different and that it is different, it’s changing for me. It’s getting me excited again. I get really pumped up when I can help people and when I had my other business, and I was going through the copywriting, I would give a lot of my client’s marketing advice because I was learning all this stuff. It was so exciting. It spilled over into everything I did. And so I had these wonderful conversations with people, and they would come back and tell me, “Oh hey, I tried that thing you were telling me. Yeah, it really worked. It’s amazing.”.


Knowing More than You Think You Do


Tina: That’s one of the things we talk about in Authentic Copy that “Just in time learning”. One of the things they talk about when sometimes people are afraid, well, I don’t know enough about marketing and how can I do this without previous experience?

What I teach and what I’ve done in my own life, and I think I’m hearing it in yours as well, is that you already know more than you think you’d do. If you start learning these marketing strategies and learning these basic elements of copy, you’re already far ahead of a lot of the entrepreneurs and business people that need your services. You’re already steps ahead, even if you’re not quite aware of that.

When you start talking about what you’re learning, for example, what you’re learning in Authentic Copy, when you start talking about that with your potential clients or people that you just meet in business, and you’re networking with, you find out, sometimes you get that surprise, when they’re like, “Oh wow, really?”.

Tina: And then they don’t know. They don’t know. And so by just keeping three steps ahead and continuing to build your marketing knowledge and your skills, you really conserve these people very effectively, and it doesn’t take all that long just to get to that three steps ahead point.

I think you experienced it in that previous business that you had? It’s probably becoming even more real to you now, that “Hey, I really have something to offer here. I really can do that.” That’s super gratifying to me.


Inside the Authentic Copy Family


I’m just so grateful that you’ve shared this with me, because It helps feed me as well to know that I’m serving the people that I’m working with in Authentic Copy, it’s kind of like we’re growing a family. What’s your experience inside our interactive private Facebook group? I mean as far as it being supportive or any of those types of things?

Lisa: Well, it’s very supportive. You know, I submitted something to the Q and A, and I think everybody gets a great deal of benefit out of the Q and A sessions that you do every Tuesday. Most of us can’t be there during the day because we have other jobs, lives, etc. But, it’s great that it’s recorded. So I imagine it’s great fun for the people that are there live. I got there for a little bit live; I stole away in a break at work. It’s great when you get to listen to the full thing. The one I submitted, so many people were thanking me and saying how helpful it was for them. And honestly, the critiques that I’ve watched, really help other people, it just makes so much sense because you can see the real-life examples and you think “Oh, okay yeah, I probably would have said it that way too” or “Oh, oh, that’s why it doesn’t work. Okay, now I get it.” so it’s just helpful stuff. There’s some great material here and seeing how you can tweak it to make it that much more exciting, that’s really exciting.

Tina: It’s really fun. I actually love doing it because I love marketing. Obviously I’m a word nerd, or I wouldn’t be doing what I do, but just to be able to see how we can strengthen that? What can we do to make that even more effective? And it’s not a tearing down of anything, it’s adding that energy, revitalizing it and taking a good idea and sometimes finding the ones that maybe aren’t so good and saying, no, let’s not do that, and this is why. So that, you know, why we want to go in that direction with how the copy is written and what that message is. Because really, when it comes down to it, it’s really about building a relationship. And so we build relationships in Authentic Copy, and we build them in our community, in the interactive, and we work on building those relationships with your potential clients and the people that you’re communicating with through your copy, and, how you’re going to build your business.


Mindset and Spirituality are

Rocket Fuel for Your Business


Tina: And so it all fits together. And the spiritual aspect, as well as the mindset is just the rocket fuel for your business. When you can add this extra element and not just the superficial. One of the things I teach is; we’re selling more than it looks like, it’s beneath the surface of how we tap into that connection, then the emotion, and it starts at home, it starts right in our Authentic Copy group also, building that way.

Someone in the group told me she practices meditation and prayer every morning. And when she saw me online, she said, “I knew immediately that you were the one, you were the one.” I think you experienced that without me even knowing it, it just took a little longer.

So, Lisa, in closing, what would you say to anyone that’s considering joining Authentic Copy and learning the copywriting and marketing and adding that spiritual dimension to it?

Lisa: Well, if anyone is looking at your course and wondering if it’s worth the investment, I would have to say that it over delivers. The information that you give in the critiques, the way you interact with people, all of the videos, the lives and all of the information that you share, it just continues to give and give. I feel like I’m already… I haven’t earned any money yet, but I still feel like I’ve gotten the value for my money from it and I’m totally thrilled and happy, and I know I’m going to be successful with it.

Tina: I know you are too, because one of the things I know about you Lisa, is that you’re more powerful than you even realize. And that’s one of the things that I’ve just noticed about you early on. I’ve got my little goosebumps my Celestial Sherpa chills right now because I know you’re going to continue. We’re building this foundation, you’re building it, I’m giving you the tools to work with and kind of lighting a path for you, but you’re doing the work, you’re doing the work. And that’s the thing, anyone that comes into the program and is willing to put that effort into it; there’s so much more to it than just the headlines and the emails and the copy, that is building a foundation. It goes deeper than that, and is more enduring than that.

Tina: When you add your copywriting and marketing skills, you’re unstoppable. And I know that that’s going to be the case for you, Lisa. Pretty soon you’ll be there because you won’t be at that j-o-b, when you’re able to make that transition. It’s a journey; it’s not something that happens overnight, there’s a building process, kind of like building a home. You’re building that foundation, and I know that’s what you’re doing.

Instagram #1 – What Is It and How Do I Set Up an Account?

Have you been wondering about Instagram and how to use it? Technology can be a real beast for women of a certain age. I know that I have struggled to understand all the newest things that people rave about online.

Here I am, a woman who has an online business, and I confess that I have been confused over Instagram. Should I use it? If so, why? And the real question…who is going to teach me to use it? Because let’s be honest, it can be pretty intimidating to figure out new social media stuff.

That’s why I wanted to write this series of posts on one of the most popular social media platforms out there – Instagram. Because maybe you don’t quite “get it” either. As I learn how to navigate some of the most popular online platforms, I want to take you along for the ride and show you how to not only use them but how to leverage them for your online business.

The Popularity of Instagram

Instagram is far and away the hottest new kid on the block when it comes to social media, even though it isn’t actually very new at all. Instagram launched in October of 2010 but it has gained in popularity by leaps and bounds, over the past couple of years especially.

Most of the younger generation left Facebook and went over to Instagram when their parents (and grandparents) started using Facebook, which I find absolutely hilarious. So what do we do now? We follow them to Instagram, of course!

Today, let’s talk about what Instagram is exactly, why you need to know, and how to set up your account.  In future posts, we will talk about how to use each feature of the platform, how Instagram can help your business, and finally, how to set up a marketing plan for your business using Instagram.

What Is Instagram?

Before we get too deep into the more technical aspects of Instagram, let’s talk about what it is.

  • Instagram is a social media platform that is visually based. Users can share photos, videos, and even go live on the platform. The point of Instagram is to gain followers that will like, and hopefully even share, your posts. You can follow them back, find more people to follow, and find high-quality content to share.
  • Instagram is a great way to build an audience online. It’s a great way to connect with your audience and get to know them and allow them to get to know you in a more authentic way. Instagram allows you to share pieces of your personality with your audience that other platforms don’t offer.
  • Instagram is an effective way to find brands that will sponsor content on your blog. We will talk about this in depth in another part of this series but for now, just know that if you want to do sponsored brand work, your Instagram presence is something you need to get very serious about starting right now. Don’t worry, this series will teach you what you need to know to build a firm foundation on Instagram!

Why Is Instagram Important to Me as an Online Business Owner? 

Owning an online business can feel overwhelming at times simply due to the sheer number of things you need to do and places online that you need to be. From Facebook to Pinterest, from blogging several times a week to studying your analytics to see what’s resonating with your audience, you are already busy enough. You don’t need one more thing to do unless it is going to make a real difference in your bottom line.

I am here to tell you that Instagram is going to make that much of a difference. You need to learn it and start using it. Here are the reasons Instagram is so important for your online business:

#1 – Instagram allows you to build trust with your followers. If you want your audience to not only stick around, but to also make purchases through your affiliate links or buy products you create, you have to help them learn to trust you.

People buy things from those that they know, like, and trust.

Instagram will help you develop that type of trusting relationship with your audience. Using Instagram to show your followers a side of you that you just can’t get across in a Facebook status or a blog post allows your faithful followers to feel like they know you on an even deeper level.

Think about it for a minute; who are you most likely to trust when it comes to making a purchase? Some Facebook ad from a person you’ve never heard of? Or your best friend? A television commercial or your sister?

You want to be the person that your readers turn to for advice. In order for them to see you as that person, you have to develop authentic relationships with them. And that begins by letting them get to know you. The real you. Not just the pretty pictures of your house right after the cleaners leave but the back porch with the dirty boots all over it.

#2 – You can increase engagement with your audience. Do you know what engagement is and why it’s so crucial to your business? First of all, engagement is not someone just liking your post. Engagement is when someone takes that next step and shares your post, comments on your post, or sends you a direct message on Instagram.

Why does engagement matter? Simply put, engagement shows others that you have a specific audience and they are interested in what you are offering. If you want to monetize your business, engagement is what will get you there. Brands that work with bloggers on sponsored content want to see that you have a truly engaged audience.

You don’t have to have a huge audience. Don’t worry about trying to reach some magic number like 1K or 10K. Just start working on engagement with the audience you do have. If you have 100 followers, that’s the same as having 100 people waiting to hear from you. How do you engage those 100 people? Stay tuned. We are going to cover that in depth. I promise not to leave you hanging.

For now, just know that increasing audience engagement should be your number one priority once you get some followers.

#3- Increase your opportunities for paid sponsorships. One of the easiest ways to monetize your blog is through sponsored brand campaigns. This simply means that a brand or company pays you to write about their product.

Now, I don’t want you to think that this has to be some kind of slimy, sleazy sales pitch.

You should write authentic, story-driven content that includes the product as part of the story you tell.

When brands see that you have a highly engaged audience and you know exactly what they want from you, those brands will be excited to work with you. If you want increased opportunities to work with brands, you need to begin to connect with your audience on Instagram.

How Do I Get Started on Instagram? 

Now that I have convinced you how important Instagram is to your online business, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty and learn how to use it.

We are going to go step-by-step and include plenty of screenshots so that by the time you finish reading this post, you will have an Instagram account all set up. Don’t worry about how to use it yet…we will get to that in the next post because there is a lot to learn!

Are you ready? Here we go!

By the way…as you will see I’m new to Instagram too! I’m learning and implementing right along with you. So let’s begin…

Getting your account set up > The first thing you need to do is go to the App Store on your phone and download the Instagram app. It is a free app so you don’t even have to enter credit card information if you choose not to. Just type Instagram into the search bar in the App Store and click on the Instagram option when comes up. When the Instagram picture pops up, click “GET” and then Install.

You may be asked for your Apple ID and password. (If you use an Android device, follow the steps that it gives you.)  Go ahead and type those in if required. (Some of you will have the thumbprint option to install an app.) The app will now download to your device. Once it is fully downloaded, go ahead and click on it to open it. Your next step will be to set up your account.

You will need to decide on your username and password first. You can use your real name or the name of your business. Don’t use something cutesy that has nothing to do with you or your business. If you have a blog, use your blog name if it isn’t taken.

Your username is important, so choose wisely.

Follow the prompts to choose a profile photo for your account. You can use a photo already in your camera roll or take a photo right then.

Be sure to use a good quality, headshot-style photo.

You want your followers to know what you look like.

If you click on the person icon on the bottom right of your screen, you can add a link to your website and a personal bio.

You want to make your bio tell a story. You have 150 characters, including spaces, in which to say what you want to say. Use keywords for your business in this space. And they don’t have to be complete sentences. You really don’t have room for complete sentences. I highly recommend you look at bios of other people in your industry and see what their bios look like to get ideas.

And keep in mind, people change their bios all the time so you aren’t stuck with what you write.

Once you have your bio filled out, you are officially on Instagram!!

Throw some virtual confetti and let’s go on to the next step.

Find the People You Want to Follow > Your next step is finding people to follow. You can search by a person’s name or username if you know of some already. Your search button is at the bottom of your home screen at all times. It’s the magnifying glass icon.

Perhaps there are a few bloggers you enjoy reading; go to their blogs and click on the little Instagram icon where they have their social media icons (usually at the top of their homepage) and that will take you to their Instagram account where you can click the blue Follow button.

You won’t see anything on your Instagram home screen (also called your “main feed”) until you follow some people. Do that now. Go to the search tab and enter the names of some people you want to follow or click through some blog links.

Once you are following some people, you will see all of their posts in your main feed. When you see a post from someone you follow, you can either click the blank heart underneath their post or just double tap the post to tell them you’ve seen it and you like it.

Ready to practice? You should be seeing several posts in your main feed if you followed some people in the last step. Practice double-tapping on their posts and watch the blank heart turn red!

This is the first way to interact with people on Instagram, by liking their posts!

But remember, Instagram is all about engagement so you definitely want to also leave comments for people on their posts. You can do that right underneath their post. Just click on “Add a comment” and type away. Be genuine in your comments; you aren’t commenting just to get them to notice you. You are looking to build authentic relationships with people. More about that in a future post!

Now you have an Instagram account and several people you are following! You are engaging with people and building relationships. Wasn’t that easy?

If you’ve considered freelance writing for money, you should pay close attention.

Because sometimes trying to get paid for writing might feel like a farfetched dream, especially if you want to make a reliably generous income.

Here’s a fact: I’d never been paid to write anything in my entire life, unless you want to consider writing a short business letter as a secretary in that scenario.

But when I made the decision to learn how to become a copywriter, that changed very quickly.

In fact, with no previous experience as a copywriter, I catapulted to multiple six figures my very first year.

Right about now, you might be wondering…

How I Started Earning Six Figures As A Freelance Copywriter

My copywriting career began with a decision.

I’d been cruising through the Internet one day, looking for something I could do besides the face-to-face selling and promotional tours my husband, Ron, and I had been involved in.

We were tired of racing back and forth across the country, setting up and running huge marketing events week after week.  We were tired, and I knew there had to be a better way.

Somehow, I stumbled onto an article about copywriting. And as I read it, I quite literally broke out in a sweat. This was something I knew I could do! I just had a feeling about it, even though I’d never even heard of copywriting prior to that moment.

I understood right then and there I was going to figure it out. I could FEEL it.

During this time, I’d invested in a one-on-one consultation with a life coach. I’d already dealt with some pretty hair-raising events in my life, and I was working my way through what it all meant, and what I should do next.

It was the next best thing to meeting with her in person. I knew she had a live event in Maine coming up, and I really wanted to go. But I knew there would have to be a miraculous influx of money for that to happen.

This is where mindset and manifesting enter into the picture, but that’s another story for another blog post!

The short version is…when I shared my story with my life coach, she suddenly announced that if I could get there, she would love for me to speak for about 15 minutes at her Maine event!

That’s when I knew I had to pay attention to the door opening before me. I was willing to do whatever it took move forward.

Ron was completely on board. He believed in my conviction and commitment to my goal of becoming a copywriter. And from previous experience, he knew when I had a “feeling” about something, it was worthy of our full attention.

So we did what any rational couple would do…

We sold our humble little home in Arizona to raise enough money to live on while I was getting started!

I had a pretty deep intuitive feeling about how copywriting could work, so I literally sold the VIEW of that humble little home. Why? Because that was the most special and unique benefit of that little house!

I wrote up an ad, took a photo, and drove down to the Thrifty Nickel newspaper to place my ad.

The clerk looked at me questioningly when I laid it all out on the counter.

She said, “Don’t you want to include some photos or description of the house in your ad?”

“Nope,” I replied. “That’s not what’s gonna sell it!”

And sure enough…we sold it for cash to the first person who called about my ad.

That act of faith, and taking decisive action, led directly to…

My First Copywriting Job

We drove cross-country to that event, and I stood before the audience, hands shaking, and made my presentation.

And a really weird thing happened…

People surged around me afterwards! Some of them were crying. One told me I was “golden.”

I was shocked!

One of those people was a sweet woman named Barbara Winter.

Barbara is all about (wait for it…) making a living without a job!

Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.

She has books on Amazon and travels the country making presentations.

And there she was, standing before me.

She told me she had an upcoming event in Las Vegas and hadn’t been able to sell any tickets with her current marketing copy.

She asked me if I would like to write a sales letter for her.

Of course, I said YES! And I did.

And she sold out her event. Just. Like. That.

I think I made around $500 for that first sales letter. I dunno, it may have only been $250. Either way, I was thrilled!

That’s how it all started.

And it just grew from there. I kept on. I learned. I implemented. I raised my fees.

And I made multiple six figures the first year.

I don’t tell you this to brag. I tell you so you can understand this simple truth…

If I Can Do It, YOU Can Do It.

Now don’t misunderstand.

I’m not saying you can do exactly what I did.

You may do less. You may do MORE!

I have no way of knowing.

What I know for sure is you have to be willing to trust in yourself. You have to learn.

You have to believe it is possible for you to succeed. You have to put in the effort.

If you are willing to do all of that, the chances are you can begin making some very good money working from home as a freelance writer, a COPYWRITER to be exact.

And please remember, I am the classic example of “Late Bloomer!”

I was well entrenched in my baby-boomer demographic before I even knew what the heck a copywriter WAS or what they DID.

You are NOT too old, too under-educated, too late, too big, too small, too young, too ANYTHING to learn how to become a copywriter.

Look, a lot of folks want to write. But how many of them make really great money?

The life-changing aspect of becoming a copywriter simply cannot be overlooked or ignored.

I advise new copywriters I’m working with to never even consider writing a sales letter for less than $1,000. And when you learn how to do it, you can easily write a sales letter in a week. You do the math. And that is at the LOW end of what is possible as a copywriter.

Being a word nerd can pay you extremely well. And as they say, a picture is definitely worth 1,000 words. OK, if one is good, how about FOUR?

This is the first home Ron and I were able to afford when we got married later in life. (There’s that late-blooming thing again!)

It is commonly referred to as a single-wide trailer.

Don’t get me wrong. I was intensely thankful for everything we had before copywriting.

Before I met Ron, I was a survivor of domestic violence who had lost everything and become homeless. I was grateful and amazed I even had a second chance.

But experiencing what it means to really have options in life and fulfill dreams has been a blessing beyond measure.

Which leads me to…

If you’re looking for a way to create a work-at-home job for yourself and make a great living, I definitely recommend you look into becoming a copywriter.

Learning to be a copywriter and working from home online changed my life in ways I couldn’t even imagine when I first started.

First, a little backstory…

My husband, Ron, and I had to figure out how to make a living from the first moment we met. We met later in life, after we’d each had previous marriages, kids, and our share of life’s challenges too.

He was the guy living with roommates because his previous life had left him on the edge of survival mode. I vividly recall he was wearing cheap plastic white tennis shoes from Walmart when I met him.

Yeah. Didn’t marry the guy for his money, that’s for sure. 😆

As for me, I was emerging from the biggest crisis of my life, which involved my very own psychopath who tried to do me in. I’d had to flee with my children, losing every material possession we had. We literally were left penniless, homeless, and shell-shocked.

But we prevailed! I met Ron and together we figured out how to create an entirely new way of life.

Along the way, through our RV lifestyle, we stumbled into an entirely new possibility. We began doing some amazing promotional tours for big ad agencies.

We went on the road for national promotions like Got Milk, Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals. We traveled in our RV, and for some of the promotions, I drove the specialty rig too.

For example, I hauled the “Wonka Mobile” all around the country.

And here’s a funny secret…both Willie Wonka AND the Oompa Loompa at this event were my daughter! 💜

She was on a college break, so we were able to hire her to help with the Chicago event.

That darn Oompa Loompa costume was cumbersome too! Her arms were pinned to her sides, restricted by the big plastic head, and she could only see what was right in front of her, so I had to lead her around by the hand.

It was quite a time for us, learning how to “sell” a concept…an experience, without money ever changing hands. It was our responsibility to engage the public so effectively, they would want to participate in our events, which were fun, colorful, and free.

For Willie Wonka, we gave away the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where they could also win a golden ticket for more goodies, and we gave away all kinds of Wonka candy (sorry dentists and parents of America!).

It was all about getting eyeballs and engagement from the crowds of people at our events as diverse as the Boston Marathon, Major League Baseball games, fairs, and festivals.

We even did an event inside a Hollywood movie studio!

It was a pretty big deal actually, as the marketing events were funded at multimillion-dollar levels. But it was also exhausting, as we crisscrossed the country every single week, with event scheduling we had no control over.

Eventually we moved on and figured out the fine art of selling physical products face-to-face. We got very good at it, becoming top sellers in the nation for our product.

We were even invited inside the Pentagon three different times to set up shop and sell our product.

That was truly a fascinating experience we’ll always remember.

But again, the physical demands of this wore us down.

And THAT is when I discovered copywriting!

This can be a very reasonable investment, especially considering the amount of moneymaking potential you will have when you acquire the skills.

I probably started off with an investment of less than $1,000 to get a handle on what copywriting is all about. That turned into multiple six figures within the first year.

I did not have either of those going for me, and it simply is not necessary.

In fact, sometimes the folks with journalism or English degrees find it HARDER to get into the groove of copywriting, not easier. 

Why is that? Because they often have to UN-learn what was pounded into their brains about “how to write.”

Copywriting is much more conversational and informal than many other types of writing. If you can write like a person talks and factor in marketing strategy at the core of the “conversation,” you have the first foundational skills to becoming a copywriter.

In fact, you can make more as a copywriter than many other types of freelance writers.

The big difference is the need for copywriters is all about the client making money. Often it is LOTS of money. As in millions.

When they have strategic copy that works to create more sales, they make more money. Simple as that. Entrepreneurs and businesses need copywriters!

And they will pay.

For me, I started online around 2004. Nobody knew who I was. But with a very basic beginning in copywriting, I was able to hit multiple six figures in my first year.

And I did it entirely from my home on wheels too. It really IS a perfect job for working from home online, no matter where you are.

As for the money…

I’m not saying everyone can do what I did that quickly. I’m probably unusual in that.

But it is certainly possible to get to a very healthy five figures within the first year.

And that’s just an average. Fact is, working in an agency as an employee actually pays LESS than working as a freelance copywriter.

Many agencies require a college degree.

They will have tightly constrained salary limitations regarding how much you make and when you can get a raise.

And you’re still under the thumb of the powers that be. Boo!

          4. There is an ongoing need for copywriters that continues to grow. You can’t be replaced by offshore outsourcing.

Just based on cultural norms, nuances, and common marketing practices, you are guaranteed you won’t be replaced in this way.

While the rich resource of offshore workers is extremely valuable and helpful to many areas of entrepreneurship and business, copywriting is not one of them.

And the need is tremendous! analyzed over 49,000 companies and their freelance job posting history between January 1 and February 28, 2018.

Copywriting won’t be automated. Your human brain, spirit, and soul are necessary.

Look, even cashiers at Walmart are being replaced by self-service kiosks.

At Costco the other day, I saw they had installed a self-service area for ordering the famous Costco hotdog, pizza, and frozen yogurt.

Everything from car repair to telephone answering is being replaced by automation.

Call the doctor lately? How about your favorite pharmacy?

Chances are your first line of communication is through an automated system.

Copywriting requires the human dimension, the emotional component, and intuitive ability that takes it from mediocre to amazing.

Notice I said FREELANCE. This isn’t the same as working for an agency.

RV Lifestyle Tips for Working On The Road Successfully

The RV Lifestyle is an incredible way to live and work on the road. But chances are, you might need to figure out how to create an RV office space, as well as reliable Internet.

If you want to be an RV entrepreneur or digital nomad, conquering these two issues should be right at the top of your to-do list.

Here are 5 Tips for Working at Home in Your RV

          1. Create Your RV Office With A Dedicated Work Space

I realize this can be a bit tricky if you are in a very small RV, so tap into your creativity! You might need to have a temporary table you can set up, a way to use the dashboard area, or work on your dinette.

I absolutely require a dedicated work space, so we have always customized every RV we have owned or had built, to include an RV office for me.

I also prefer to have an office chair to work in, rather than perch on a couch, or precariously balance a laptop. I keep more focused, and my back is happier too.

I realize there is an abundance of images and photos for working on the road that glorifies the concept of sitting at a picnic table, lounging on a beach, or some other idealized scenario for working from anywhere…but that’s not how I’ve done it!

Usually, the choice we have made is to jettison the dinette, in favor of an office space. If we are going to be flexible about a seating arrangement, we will sacrifice the dining option rather than the office setup.

We’ve made that more workable by having a custom-built theater type loveseat that has a small table in the center that can be raised or lowered, with cupholders in it. So, we can manage balancing plates and drinks that way!

Before we switched to a motorhome for our RV life, we had several custom built fifth wheels…five to be exact!

This is how we handled the office space in a custom-built 5th Wheel…

It was compact but did the job. It also had a pullout work surface above the drawers on the left side, which expanded the desktop for me when I was working.

In other 5th wheels, we designed L-shaped work spaces in lieu of the dinette, which also worked very well.

Now we have what is called a Super-C motorhome, which means a Class C motorhome on steroids with huge carrying capacity and much larger than your typical Class C motorhome.

We completely gutted this one and had custom cabinetry installed, including my office space.

It works really well. I’ve been doing this long enough to know what suits my work habits best, so there’s no wasted space in this design. There’s also a pullout table top near the loveseat, so we can use that as a dining area too.

To do that, I turn my office chair around, and we carry one very comfortable, light weight folding chair. It’s nice looking and does the job! It slides into the back of our wardrobe closet easily when not in use.

 So how did we get this done?

 We went to Indiana and lived in the driveway of our Amish cabinet maker while he did the work. It was COLD! But worth it.

          2. Have A Backup Plan for Internet Access

 You’re an RV entrepreneur. You’re a digital nomad. You’re a road warrior!

And that means you’re definitely going to need reliable Internet connections if you want to run an online business from the comfort of your RV.

But you’re also going to need to be creative and flexible about that scenario at times.

Our first line of defense is using a wireless router, also called MiFi by some cell phone providers.

Here’s how it works:

MiFi is a small device that operates off of your cellphone signal and is also your wireless router.

When you need to use it, you turn on the connection and sit it on your desk. Then you can join your wireless network from any of your devices such as cellphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.

It automatically provides a secure network, but depending on where you are, you may find other networks showing up with a similar name as the one your device comes with. So, you will want to create a new unique name for your network.

We use AT&T as our cellphone provider with Apple iPhones.

We use two separate MiFi devices, which we purchased through AT&T. Our newest one is called a Nighthawk.

They come with varying gigabyte plans, which will determine how much bandwidth you have available. Each of our units is on its own “unlimited” plan.

But that doesn’t really mean unlimited, as in using it 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

That’s not how it works.

After you use 20 gigabytes in a month, you can be throttled if you are in a high-traffic area.

That means your online speeds will be reduced to a snail’s crawl.

That’s why we have TWO units, each with unlimited plans, so we always have a backup if we get throttled.

Streaming videos or music, Zoom calls, uploading and downloading high resolution photos…all of these activities will gobble up your data plan very quickly!

You can also tether your iPhone to your computer and use it to provide Internet connection.

We currently live in the best of times for working on the road in your RV, because there are many ways to connect to the Internet.

If you’re staying in an RV Park, most have Wi-Fi available, but you can’t always count on the quality of it. So, I don’t recommend using that as your primary way to have Internet on the road.

You probably already know most McDonald’s and Starbucks have Internet available, for the stereotypical “laptop lifestyle”, but frankly, this has never been a resource for me.

I need to work in a quiet space, and I also prefer working on my desktop iMac, so that just hasn’t been something I’ve utilized.

You’ll also find most Flying J truck stops, and others like Pilot and Loves usually have Wi-Fi available too, so that can be an option for you. 

Many Rest Areas and Welcome Centers provide Wi-Fi, which can be a great way to work for a while, while you’re taking an extended break, or even spending the night in a rest area in States that allow you to do so.

There are various ways to check service areas for your cellphone coverage. Your cellphone provider should have coverage maps on their websites, so you can get a rough idea of where you’ll find adequate signal for Internet access.

There are also various signal boosters you can get to increase the strength of your cellular signal, as well as regular Wi-Fi boosters.

If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in the outback, far off the beaten track with no cellphone signal, satellite Internet is still an option, though it is very expensive.

The systems can run as much as $6,000 to $15,000.

There’s such a range of these, I’m not going to attempt to rate or recommend any. Most all of these options can be researched with a simple Google search.

          3. Don’t Try to Combine Driving Days With Work Days

Now maybe you’ve got some Wonder Woman DNA running through your veins and can do both. But not me!

Since I do ALL the driving of our 45’ mobile office, I need to keep my work days separate from my driving days. This is especially true when I’m on a “Truck Drivin’ Mama” push to get cross country, burning through 2600 miles in five or six days.

That takes a lot of energy and concentration, which means I have very little left to devote to writing copy or taking care of other typical work day tasks.

If you are doing both the driving AND the work, I recommend you plan ahead for long driving days. Factor them into your schedule when you are establishing work flow, deadlines, and consultations.

At times, I can manage both a phone consultation and a driving day, but I have to plan for it.

Since I can’t drive during a call and need to be parked, I can’t conduct business while the wheels are rolling.

So, we’ll look for a Rest Area, Welcome Center, or plan to leave later in the day, or stop for the day sooner than usual.

It’s all extremely workable IF you plan for it.

This also means, not answering your business phone while you are driving or in travel mode.

For one thing, it’s distracting. For another, you don’t want to be taken by surprise on a business call. I teach my students to guard their time and establish a perimeter of power around your availability as well.

That means, SCHEDULING your calls. This also will teach your clients to value your time, rather than expect you to pick up the phone on a moment’s notice.

The other way to handle long distances is simply to slow down.

Admittedly, that’s a difficult one for me! I’m used to burning up the miles to get where we need to go, and then staying longer when we get there.

By slowing down, you can plan a few days of driving, punctuated by several days, weeks, or months in one location where you can establish your work routine quickly, and consistently.

There are many pluses to this method, because then you can also structure your down times into the schedule.

Besides, if you’re like me, you may need a day or two…or seven…to get your brain back into work mode instead of travel mode!

          4. Establish Work Day Habits

Often times, my colleagues are surprised when they learn I get ready for work, even working at home online.

Now don’t get me wrong…I’m all for yoga pants and bare feet as typical work attire!

But not PJ’s. Not with “bed hair”. Not in “I’d be embarrassed to be seen in public” mode either.

I do get dressed in some manner of presentable clothing.

I fix my hair. I put on makeup. I put on my earrings.

Why do I do this if nobody is going to see me that day?

Well for one thing, because I see me!

And because it sends a signal to my brain, body, and spirit that it’s time to go to work.

There’s something about it that truly puts you into work mode faster than slouching around in whatever you slept in, with messy hair and unwashed face.

Some of my colleagues have told me they started implementing this practice too and found it really does make a difference for them.

It’s simple to do. It’s effective. I recommend you try it!

          5. Respect Your Body Clock

I don’t know what it is about online entrepreneurs, but a lot of them are night owls.

They like to work into the wee hours and seem to be very productive that way.

That. Is. NOT. Me.

Oh no way! I’m the original early bird, often getting up at 4:30 a.m. to begin my day. It’s not so hard when our summertime Arizona sunrises start early and look like this!

RV Lifestyle Tips for Working On The Road Successfully

If I could do EVERYTHING in the morning, I would. It pains me to have to shift some tasks to afternoon, or (shudder) evening hours!

It’s not unusual for us to hit the road for a long RV drive day before sunrise. I have the hardest time understanding you folks who need to crank up to a 10 a.m. departure! I’m usually half way to wherever by that time. 😆

I’m simply way more productive in early morning, so that’s when I schedule my most important tasks of the day. When I’m working on sales copy, it is almost always going to be in the morning.

I will say though, I have trained myself to be able to be more productive in the afternoon hours.

It might be that I’m proofreading some copy, taking care of phone calls, writing emails…that type of thing.

And occasionally, I have been known to push hard for long hours, even into the night, when on a critical deadline. But this rare.

The main thing is, whatever YOUR particular body clock timing is, honor it. You’ll be way more effective a lot happier for it.

So, there you have it!

RV living isn’t always easy, but it’s almost ALWAYS worth it.

There will definitely be challenges when you begin working from home online no matter where you are. But adding wheels and the open road to the mix can certainly create new challenges.

Just remember, these challenges can usually be handled pretty easily.

And the freedom you’ll experience as an RV entrepreneur, digital nomad, and adventurer is priceless.

Eventually, you’ll have things so dialed in you hardly have to think about HOW you’ll manage it.

You’ll be too busy enjoying WHERE you are, and WHAT you’re doing!

Have you ever wondered if working from home online is possible?

I’m here to say absolutely, it is! But guess what?

I’m going to throw in a fun twist you might not have thought of…working from home online combined with RV living full time!

This is something I can speak to from twenty years of experience.

My husband Ron and I have been avid RV travelers for a very long time. We love it because it’s all about the freedom to work anywhere you want, when you want, and even IF you want.

When we first started the RV life, we had very little money, but a BIG determination to experience life in a whole new way.

Ron and I had only been married a short time. We were both starting over again, but we found a way! We sold the modest mobile home we’d managed to buy in Central Oregon, and pretty much everything we owned.

And so, began our RV lifestyle.

It’s a funny thing with the RV lifestyle. It ebbs and flows and changes.

At first, we tried what is called workcamping.

Basically, workcamping is when you work in a temporary job, usually related to RVing.

It might be as hosts in a campground, office workers in an RV park, sometimes even a volunteer at a State or National park.

Sometimes you are paid a nominal hourly rate, plus you receive a full-hookup RV space.

Other times, it is only the RV space, as you are working in a volunteer position.

This might mean 20-hours or more a week of work in exchange for your RV site. If you are a couple, this usually means you each must work a set number of hours per week.

Some people love this arrangement, but for us, we quickly discovered it wasn’t our cup of tea.

We just didn’t fit well into a tight regimen, being at the beck and call of a supervisor, and making very small money.

We’re both more entrepreneurial than that. But for some people, it’s a perfect fit.

So, we set out to find a different option. In a way, we were kind of like pioneers. While most folks were scrambling for their next workcamping jobs, I started my copywriting business.

I have to smile when some new to the RV lifestyle act like they discovered the Internet and working from the road. We started doing that when we still had a bag phone for communication.

That thing was the size of a backpack!

But it worked. And we GREW in experience and knowledge and SHRANK our phone over time.

For me, and others I’ve taught, copywriting has been the springboard to an extremely successful business I can do from anywhere.

We have literally been in almost every state in the USA, most of Canada, and even lived in Central Mexico for two years (without the RV), plus owned several different properties in Arizona.

I’ve been able to work from anywhere and everywhere, thanks to the Internet and my copywriting skills. Combine that with Divine guidance and an abundance mindset, and it’s been pretty amazing.

Now our RV is dubbed the Mobile Office, though some call it the Command Center when they see it because it’s kind of imposing.

Our RV is called a Renegade and is built on a Freightliner Heavy Duty Truck Chassis.

Yep, it’s big! 45’ long, plus I tow a 4-door Jeep Rubicon behind it.

So, if you long to have more freedom in your life and would love to take to the open road in your RV, take heart!

Because if you’re the entrepreneurial type, who also wants to make more than minimum wage for your efforts, there are a number of ways you can work at home from your RV.

Nowadays, with the variety of ways you can gain Internet access, cell phones, boosters, data plans, and smart technology, there’s simply no reason you can’t be successful working from home online and experiencing the exhilaration of the RV lifestyle.

You can work from home online, even if “home” has four (or more!) wheels. Home really IS where you park it.

You can work from a laptop, literally on your dining room table or even the dashboard of your RV.

I prefer to use an iMac desktop computer. We have had several different versions of mobile office over the past 20 years, but we always customize the interior to accommodate my office.

1. Blogging

When you do it the right way, blogging can provide an income for you, and it’s fun too!

Not only do you get to flex your writing muscles, you can structure your blog posts to attract traffic by using keywords people are looking for.

The first thing to do is simply BEGIN!

I recommend creating your blog in WordPress, because Google loves WordPress and it will help you attract organic traffic to your site. It has search engine optimization built into it.

Even if you’re not particularly techy (like me!) it doesn’t have to be that hard to create your first blog. Start right here with How To Start A Blog and follow the steps.

You can seriously be up and running with a blog in ONE day.

However, if you’re like me, maybe you want to get started on the right foot by digging a little bit deeper into the foundational strategy for your blog. Especially if you are non-techy and just need a step by step process to follow.

I invested in a very affordable training called Blog by Number, and I highly recommend it.

Suzi just has a way of literally going one step at a time, while explaining both the HOW and the WHY as you go. Super helpful!

Don’t make the mistake of going for a free WordPress site though. You won’t be able to monetize it unless you go for the paid version, which is very inexpensive.

If you want to make money from home in your RV, you need to begin your blog with the end in mind. And that means, building a foundation from day one that will allow you to monetize your blog.

How do you do that you ask?

There are a number of ways to work from home online with your blog:

  1. Guest Blog Posts
  2. Sponsorship
  3. Paid Ads
  4. Affiliate Marketing
  5. Offering Freelance Services
  6. Promoting Your Own Products

Of these, the ones that can make you a really great income would be Affiliate Marketing, Offering Freelance Services, and Promoting Your Own Products.

Today let’s talk a bit about Affiliate Marketing and Freelance Services as ways to make money with your blog.


2. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is when you endorse products or services you personally use, recommend, and believe in.

You get what is called an affiliate link for each product or service, and then whenever someone decides to purchase through your link, you receive a small commission.

Over time, the small commissions can really add up to very tidy sum.

And you can continue to grow your affiliate income, as the momentum builds, and you attract a larger audience to your blog.

A lot of new bloggers completely overlook this aspect of generating income through a blog.

But if you are new to all this, you need to learn how to do affiliate marketing ethically and appropriately, so you don’t accidentally spam anybody!

3. Freelance Services

Of course, I am a big proponent of offering client services as a way to make money from home online.

For me, it’s been direct response copywriting.

Honestly, when I began providing copywriting services, it changed our lives.

Basically, copywriting is when you write marketing copy for online and offline businesses.

You can focus on entrepreneurs, sticks and bricks store owners, and everything in between.

You can decide to specialize in a particular niche, like real estate, Internet marketing or personal coaching…or you can be more into multiple niches like I’ve always been.

You can totally up-level your copywriting skills by understanding the marketing strategies that support all the copy elements. And no, you don’t have to come into it already knowing all that!

You can begin from exactly where you’re at.

For example, I didn’t start as a copywriter until I was past 50!

  • You can brand your “Thank you for Subscribing!” pages and how subscribers receive their downloads. I’ll show you exactly how to do this in a moment.
  • You are not charged extra when a subscriber opts in to more than one of your forms. I mean- you’re giving away INCREDIBLE content so they’re going to want all they can get, right? No reason to be charged extra on your end for a truly engaged reader.
  • The system on ConvertKit automatically eliminates duplicates when you send an email to particular Tags or Segments on your list. If a user is tagged more than once, they will NOT receive more than one email. Good lookin’ out, ConvertKit.

Now I’ll walk you through how to set up your own email forms in ConvertKit.

Click the ‘Forms’ tab at the top of the screen and that will bring up this window. Click + Create Form from here.

You’ll be given the option to host your opt-in as either a Form or a Landing Page. I’ll show you how to create a Form to use inside your blog posts.

If you choose to use a Form this will be the next screen that you see. Choose to either have your Form inline, or modal.

After choosing the format of your Form you’ll choose which Template to use.

Now you’ll customize your opt-in form, control the settings, and brand it.

Step one is deciding whether you want to show a success message after a subscriber opts in, or redirect them to another page.

You can type whatever you like to be your success message here, and your message will be displayed after each subscriber fills out one of your forms to join your email list.

Or another option is to redirect them to another page. This can be a useful tool because if a reader has decided to opt-in for your freebie they may also be interested in a paid product you offer.

One successful monetization strategy you can implement on your website using this tool is to offer the paid product at a special “subscriber’s discount.” Offering this paid product at a discount to new subscribers for a limited time can help increase your sales. Buyer psychology tells us that once a user has decided to purchase from you once (even if at a very low price) they are more likely to buy from you again.

The next option is to choose whether or not you want to send out an Incentive Email by either checking the box or leaving it unchecked.

If you choose to send an Incentive Email you will be prompted to Edit Email Contents, and decide if you want subscribers redirected to a URL which you will enter here, or…

…if you want to provide them with a content upgrade they can download directly from their email like a free printable, free ebook, or other downloads.

To Edit Email Contents click the big gray button and then you will see this screen. Your email address will be in the topmost field. The line marked with a red arrow and a 1 is the subject line your new subscriber will see. The line marked with a red arrow and a 2 is the message your user will read. This is totally customizable using ConvertKit! Pretty cool, huh?

You can change the text on the big blue button marked with arrow 3 to say whatever you please as well. The final arrow 4 is just a nice place to let your subscriber know you’re glad they’re here on your list.

The next setting you can control is branding your Form. Choose background color, size of the border, a background image from your files, or Custom CSS.

The final setting allows you to decide if you want to continue to show the form on your website once someone has already subscribed. You can choose to send subscribers to a Thank You Page or enable a reCAPTCHA.

Once you have your Form created in ConvertKit you’ll want to set up Automations to make the magic happen! Automations allow you to do all kinds of things. Let me explain.


Automations are created when a user triggers an event by taking a particular action that you have set in place. When a user subscribes to Form A, for example, you can tag that subscriber based on their interests relating to that Form then cause a welcome email sequence to go out to them ushering them into the community of your subscriber base.

Click the Automations tab at the top of your screen then look for the blue “New Automation” button on the right.

This is the next screen you’ll see. Click “Create Automation.”

Select which Form you want to create an Automation for and it will appear at the top.

If you click the + to the right side, you can add additional measures the subscriber must meet before the trigger will take place.

The + below the Form you’ve chosen gives you the option to choose a trigger based upon an Action such as delivering an email sequence, delaying a series of emails, adding or removing a tag, moving the subscriber to another Segment, or set your own custom field.

You can choose a Condition trigger if the subscriber has a Tag or create a Custom Field.

You can choose a trigger based upon an event.

After you’ve set up your Automation you’ll want a Sequence to go with it… hmm, that reminds me of a children’s book about a mouse and a cookie. 🐭🍪

Ah, but nonetheless you’ll need a Sequence of emails to go along with your Automation. An excellent starting place in Sequences is to create a Welcome Email Sequence in ConvertKit.


Sequences in ConvertKit are emails you set up to go out automatically to subscribers. This set of emails could be a free email course you’ve created as an incentive for subscribers, a welcome email series, or a week of freebies to engage with your current subscribers.

Click the Sequences tab at the top of the page and name your new Sequence.

ConvertKit has a short step-by-step template to guide your creativity. Add as few or as many emails as you need, set the timing for each email to be delivered, and add links inside the emails to Tag subscribers.

Broadcasts in ConvertKit

Broadcasts in ConvertKit are emails that go out to either your entire subscriber list or a Segment or Tagged portion of your subscriber base. For example, if a user opts-in for an incentive on the topic “How to Start Blog” then she may not be interested in receiving emails about your summer homeschool plans.

Receiving emails so far off topic from what first drew your user to opt in may even cause her to unsubscribe. It’s easy to avoid this by simply segmenting and tagging your subscribers.

Remember though—don’t get discouraged or freaked out when you’re doing all the right things, but someone still unsubscribes from your list. That’s OK! You only want people there who truly wish to hear from you and are aligned with your message. It’s best for BOTH of you that way.

The ones who may leave are simply making space, both literally and energetically, for those you can serve the best.

So, let’s continue!

Creating a Broadcast in Seva |

Click the Broadcasts tab at the top of your screen in ConvertKit then you can choose how to filter your newsletter or emails. Some emails may do well to go out to all subscribers while others should be sent to portions of your list that are most likely to be interested in the subject and engage with the content.

Be smart and use your Tags and Segment your list or risk unnecessarily losing subscribers.

Don’t sound like SPAM

Speaking of being smart with email marketing, you’ll want to avoid using words or techniques which could get your Broadcasts marked as SPAM.

Defining Your Avatar: Who Is Your Target Audience?

Having trouble figuring out what the heck an avatar is, or how to find target audience examples you can relate to? Let’s tackle that one today.

A common misstep many bloggers and marketers make when first starting out, is busting your behind churning out blog content and trying to create products before you are clear about who your “perfect person” or prospect is.

Figuring out and defining your target audience will immediately put you in a much better place to speak with them effectively, both through your blog posts and your emails.

It will absolutely help you determine what types of products they want that you can create for them, before wasting time on something they’re not even interested in.

And to be clear, the term target audience is just another way of saying your avatar, which is yet ANOTHER way of saying…

Your Perfect Person

Let’s start with one simple question…

WHO Do You Want to Serve?

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again because it’s worth remembering…

Tina’s Tip: When you talk to everybody, you talk to nobody.

Probably one of the biggest mistakes you could make when starting your blog is to fall into what I call “Field of Dreams” thinking…if you build it, they will come. Wrong.

It is absolutely essential you understand exactly who you are reaching out to, through your writing, your blog topics, your content, and eventually, the products or services you will create.

Keep in mind, the most successful blogs are built on the solid foundation of wanting to HELP your readers.

This could be by providing tangible solutions to your avatar’s “pain points” and problems, encouragement or guidance with their fears, frustrations, and struggles, as well as virtual high-5’s and applause for their triumphs.

The bottom line is your blog is all about THEM, not you.

But again, your goal isn’t to talk to a crowd.

Your goal is to talk to ONE person: That perfectly ideal prospect who is already interested in what you have to say. And that’s why…

You Become a Marketing Detective…

Yep, it’s time for you to do some super sleuthing and getting clear on exactly who your “ideal person” is!

We call this one person your AVATAR or TARGET AUDIENCE.

But you can also call them your ideal prospect, persona, archetype, or even perfect “peep” if you want!

The point is, it’s your job to discover the “evidence” necessary to construct a persona or customer avatar who represents exactly who you’re writing to.

This will be an imaginary personality you’ll probably create yourself, but you can also model them off a real person if you already have an ideal client, or know someone who would be that perfect prospect for you.

Tina’s Tip: Here’s a new angle to consider. Jump into your “way back machine” for minute. What do YOU wish you’d had help with five years ago? What have YOU struggled with? You may even find your avatar is a lot like YOU once were!

Strive to be as specific as possible. Your avatar should practically leap off the page as a living, breathing individual. You can even name them!

Then in everything you write or create, keep your avatar, that ONE ideal prospect, in mind. Talk to them as if you were sitting down for a cozy chat together. Have a conversation with them, talk TO them, not AT them.

Here’s the other really awesome way to get there, especially if you think you’re not a good enough writer, or don’t know enough “fancy” words…

Just Write It Like You’d TALK It!

Tina’s Tip: If you’re really feeling stuck or confused, try recording yourself actually talking! Talk to ONE person, your avatar, without self-editing or overthinking it. Talk It. Listen to it. WRITE it.

You could even have it transcribed, and then work from there.

Then read what you wrote aloud. If you stumble reading it aloud, tweak the “awkward” till it flows smoothly and naturally.

You’ll soon discover writing conversationally has become second nature!

Don’t try to overthink the process. Simply have an authentic conversation and you’ll be miles ahead of stuffy, corporate-speak.

If you’re thinking this sounds like a bit of work, you’re right!

And it is absolutely critical to your long-term success.

That means, you need to devote some time to rummaging around on the Internet. You might begin by looking for comments on blog posts in your niche.

Find out what’s being talked about in private forums or Facebook groups, what questions they ask, and what frustrations they share. It’s amazing what you’ll learn by doing this. You’ll probably begin noticing patterns and common themes.

And hey, you can even have real live conversations!

You’ll unearth surprising hidden treasure by simply ASKING. Ask questions of people you know, work with, or have connections to, who might be in your target audience.

For example, ask them what their biggest frustration is with [fill in the blank with YOUR niche], just like this:

“What’s your biggest frustration about…

  • building your own website?”
  • choosing a lawyer?”
  • refinishing wood furniture?”
  • figuring out a Paleo diet?”

Yep, just like that. Digging into some research. Asking. Listening. Reading. Paying attention. And asking some more until you truly understand.

As you begin to piece together more insights about your avatar, you can take it a step further by keeping some specific questions in mind…find the answers to them and you’ll be well on your way to identifying YOUR target audience!

Here’s How To Quickly Create Target Audience Examples

For Starters, Answer These Questions…

  • What is their gender and age?
  • Do they have kids? Pets? How many?
  • What kind of phone do they have? (Do they use their smart phone to get online, or do they have a cheap phone just for making phone calls)
  • What does your ideal prospect’s typical day look like?
  • What do they value?
  • What bugs the heck out of them, and really trips their trigger?
  • What kind of challenges or obstacles are they facing?
  • What motivates them and keeps them going?
  • What kind of things are unimportant to them?
  • What are their strengths?
  • What are their weaknesses?
  • What do they want to learn about and why?
  • What keeps them awake at night?
  • Where do they hang out online?
  • What kind of solutions do they turn to Google for?

These are just a few questions to rev up your engines and get you going.

To make this even easier for you, I’ve created a FREE resource, that includes a step-by-step blueprint you can follow to help zero in on your ideal prospect.

Here are more specifics on how you can get the answers you need:

  1. TALK TO THEM: Yes, like actual conversations. Try for 5!
  • Offer free advice or a short blog analysis in return for them speaking with you.
  • Interview someone who might be an ideal client.
  • Post a request on your Facebook page or in an online group.
  • Send out an email inviting them to a conversation.
  • Instant Message someone you’ve been talking to on Facebook.


  1. WATCH & LISTEN: Hang out where your ideal prospects are.
  • Go to Amazon and read reviews for books in your niche.
  • Spend time on forums or Facebook groups and read their comments.
  • Pay attention to others who are active in your niche and see what they are talking about, and what they are offering. (This isn’t to copy them, but to figure out what’s already working.)


  1. SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES: Observe what they are saying and asking for.
  • Are they saying how much they need something?
  • Do they get excited about the potential for an answer?
  • Do they indicate they’d be willing to pay for coaching or a product?
  • Do they actually get specific about what they wish were available to them in a training?


  1. LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE: This one is GOLD for you!
  • Watch for similar phrases that pop up over and over again.
  • Notice the exact words they use to describe their problem or issue.
  • Keep track of how many times similar words are used.
  • What are they saying they want?
  • Keep a simple Word document or spreadsheet so you can eventually create a word cloud to identify exact words used the most.

Tina’s Tip: Incorporate some of their exact words into your copy, both in blog posts and emails. You’ll instantly increase your effectiveness, and your ideal prospect may just feel like you’re reading their mind!

I promise if you take the time to do this research you’ll accomplish at least SIX key steps to your success…

  1. You’ll find out exactly WHO your people are.
  2. You discover WHAT they’re looking for.
  3. WHY they need your help will become much clearer.
  4. You’ll soon see WHERE they are gathering online.
  5. WHEN you speak their language, your prospects will bond with you because they feel like you are talking directly to THEM!
  6. You’ll be more excited and motivated because you finally

know HOW to become the solution for them.

This is why laying the ground work for all of this is so important!

You’ll learn SO much about who your people are, what makes them tick, and best of all, how you can provide exactly what they’re looking for.

Your effectiveness will instantly multiply, as you find it easier and easier to create the kind of content they will love, and maximize the effectiveness with your emails.

These are the steps you need to take to increase your reach, and start making money with your blog that much faster. 

Think About It…

  • How much more effective can you be promoting targeted affiliate products when you know what your prospects truly want?
  • How many more subscribers will be eager to opt in to your list when you speak their language, and provide quality content for them?
  • How much more fun and rewarding will it be when you begin to create products they are already asking for?

I have a feeling you may be seeing the benefit of all of this.

Tina’s Tip: Remember, while we may use jargon like avatar and target audience, the most important thing to remember is we’re talking about real people, just like you, and just like me.

Your ideal prospects need to be more than a number, or a dollar sign to you.

Your first purpose should be to provide thoughtful solutions and value to every person you deal with through your blog, or any other marketing strategies you may implement.

It’s always PEOPLE first. Lead with your heart.

7-Steps For Zeroing In On Your Niche Market

Does the thought of trying to zero in on your niche market give you a headache? Let’s look at some niche market examples.

Because I understand. It can seem confusing and somewhat overwhelming. Maybe even a little scary because it’s like making a lasting commitment to someone you’re not even sure you want to marry yet!

But it doesn’t have to be that difficult when you follow the 7-Steps and niche market examples I’ll share with you today.

And it doesn’t have to be scary either! Think of it as a necessary starting point, so you can clarify who you’re talking to.

You may actually find it morphs a bit, or changes over time as you get more connected to your audience. And that’s OK.

Right now, let’s just take the first steps and look at some niche market examples together.

We’ll start with a question that comes over up over and over again. Maybe you’ve experienced this one too. You see, there is a certain amount of mystery when it comes to niche markets…

Seriously! It’s an issue. People actually debate this on webinars and podcasts. So, let’s address it right here and get it over with.

Whether you say niche to rhyme with “Itch”…

Or niche to rhyme with “Quiche”…

Either way, you need one!

Sometimes this can be the most daunting first step, but it’s really not that hard if you have a blueprint to follow. In fact, I will give you one right now!


The first thing to understand, is that if you want to be effective with your blog and actually make money from it, there’s no such thing as one size fits all.

Sometimes when you’re first starting out, it’s easy to get sidetracked and even dazed and confused by the “mechanics” of creating your blog and figuring out how you’ll start building your email list.

But here’s the deal…

The most essential foundation for making money from your blog, and growing into creating your products, is more of a mental game than a technical one.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll cast a wide net and hope to catch some prospects who are truly interested in what you have to offer.

This is where you need to pay very close attention to an extremely important concept…

Tina’s Tip: When you talk to everybody, you talk to nobody.

It’s true! I know it’s tempting to think somehow you’ll make more money and create more engagement if you go as fast as you can to reach anybody at all who might be interested in your topic.

But in fact, exactly the opposite is true.

By niching down with your market, you’ll be able to provide valuable solutions to a very specific audience.

It’s like setting up a spotlight aimed right at the perfect solution for their problem. When they see it, they will recognize it immediately as valuable to them, as clearly as if you were calling their name with a megaphone!

And they’ll be drawn to you, and what you have for them.

For example, let’s say you’re a cosmetician who has figured out some killer solutions for marketing your services with Instagram.

And you keep thinking you could actually teach this to others, and make a whole lot more money with less stress, than going full-blast slathering makeup on strangers week after week.

Sure, you could throw your advice and training out there to the world at large, thinking your Instagram strategies would work for a multitude of businesses.

But how well do you understand those other businesses?

What do you know about their challenges, frustrations, and goals?

Probably not much if they happen to be hairdressers or plumbers!

What if instead, you NARROW your niche to only attracting and teaching OTHER cosmetologists how they can market their services with Instagram?

Do you see the difference?

Whatever your niche is, you will be hugely more effective attracting your perfect prospects, if you speak very specifically to their unique needs, desires, and interests.

So obviously, the first thing you need to do now, is figure out your niche market! Here’s how you begin…

What Valuable Solutions Can You Provide

 To Your Ideal Prospects?

Here Are 7-Steps For Zeroing In On Your Niche Market:

  1. What are your unique talents, things you’re really good at (but probably take for granted!), skills and knowledge you’ve acquired over the years, or even seem to have been born with? This may be stuff you just KNOW, maybe even intuitively.
  2. What are your learned skills, such as special trainings, degrees, certifications, things you’ve gone out of your way to acquire and perfect over time?
  3. What would those close to you, like friends and family, say is your “superpower” or really obvious ability?
  4. What lights you up inside, or just flows naturally when you talk about it? While some would say follow your passion, don’t get caught up in thinking you have to have the most exciting niche in the world here. But you DO need to be able to talk about it easily and at length, especially if your blog is going to be built around this niche.
  5. What kind of title have you used to describe yourself up to this point? Does it still fit, or have you moved on?
  6. What do you want to be known for? What do you want people to think of when they hear your name?
  7. What are the monthly Google searches? Install the FREE keyword search tool, Keywords Everywhere on your computer using either Chrome or Firefox browser (you can read more about this right here).

Enter your keyword phrase and see what happens! Ideally, you’re looking for MORE than 2,000 searches a month as an excellent indicator for gauging interest and need in your potential niche. The more searches, the better!

But here’s the deal. Even if your keyword search homework yields less than 2,000 searches a month, you may still have a niche market that you can develop!

For example, the search term “how to start a hot dog cart business” shows only 90 little searches a month.

But there’s a guy right here who made six-figures from his hot dog cart training! Just check out his video and you’ll see what I mean, and hopefully you’ll be encouraged.

So, you never know. You need to follow that “lights you up” energy, trust your gut, and give it a shot!

Remember, you can blog about your topic and see what kind of interest it generates. This isn’t rocket science, and it’s not all about trying to fit into somebody else’s cookie cutter either. Be bold!

Once you go through these steps, you’ll be able to begin putting the puzzle together to gain clarity on your niche market.

You begin to work the “magical math identifier” from your answers.

You may come up with a few formulas like these:

Lights You Up + Skills = potential niche

Skills + Knowledge = potential niche

Knowledge + Lights You Up = potential niche

Monthly Google Search >2K + Knowledge = potential niche

This will become part of your blogging blueprint for getting very focused and clear about your niche market.

Tina’s Tip: Your niche doesn’t have to be super unusual or exotic either—it’s really OK to go for the low hanging fruit, with something that comes so naturally to you, you can easily talk about it if I woke you up at 4 a.m. and said “GO!”

Here’s where we need to pause for a moment to address some stinkin’ thinkin’ that may be bubbling to the top for you right now.

It goes something like this…

“Who am I to think I’m an expert at anything?”

I’ve seen this over and over again in trainings I’ve done, especially for new copywriters.

This can also surface from a common affliction I call, comparison-itis!

This can become a crippling condition, caused by spending way too much time rummaging through a variety of blogs and websites of other online leaders or successful bloggers.

It’s so easy to feel like you’ll never get where they are, never be that successful, never be able to teach a topic they may specialize in…blah, blah, blah, on and on go the voices in your head!

So, here’s the deal on all this brain garbage that often gets in the way… 

It’s Time for A Brain Cleanse!

Nobody else will ever anoint you an expert, sprinkle pixie dust on your head, or deliver the crown.

YOU need to do it for yourself. YOU need to own your expertise, your abilities, and your “Only-you-can-be-you” special sauce you’ll bring to everything you do.


Sure, you may not be the first person in your niche, or the only one teaching what you teach. Here’s your answer…

Refer back to BRAIN CLEANSE #1:

Only YOU can be you.

You’ll bring your own special energy, perspective, and insights to everything you do. You’re not broken. You’re not incomplete.

Somebody out there is waiting for exactly what you have for them. They need you! And you have a responsibility to deliver. So, do it!

Remember, everybody has something to teach. Sometimes you’re so close to it, you just take it for granted, because it comes easily to you.

I know it can be scary to narrow your niche because you think somehow, you’ll miss out on something. But it is exactly the opposite. This is precisely how you’ll attract YOUR people.
